New legislation to strengthen WA’s Banned Drinkers Register

02 March 2023

The McGowan Government will introduce new legislation to strengthen the Banned Drinkers Register following trials in the Pilbara, Kimberley and Goldfields regions.

  • Banned Drinkers Register will be strengthened to improve effectiveness
  • Legislation to optimise the register is currently being drafted
  • Laws will create additional pathways onto the register through police and courts
  • Immediate steps are being taken to expand the trial to Carnarvon

The Riverbank Program provides grants to State and local government agencies managing land in the Swan Canning Riverpark.

The funding is available for projects that protect or enhance the environmental, recreational and cultural values of the rivers. The program is supported by the Burswood Park Board.

The State Government has contributed more than $27.2 million to restoration projects at 352 sites within the Swan Canning Riverpark since 2002. This funding has been matched by foreshore land managers meaning a total of $59 million has been invested.

Comments attributed to Environment Minister Reece Whitby:

"I encourage eligible candidates to submit applications for the Riverbank Program, which for more than two decades has funded important work to protect and restore our waterways.

"These projects go a long way to creating habitats for wildlife, reducing erosion and improving water quality.

"I look forward to seeing what this next round of funding will deliver for our iconic rivers, which are the centrepiece of Perth."
